FDNY and NYPD soccer teams after Commissioner's Cup game at Yankee Stadium

10/23/16 - This week in the LISFL saw a renewal of the Commissioner's Cup game between the FDNY and NYPD soccer teams. It was the first time the game had been played in two years and this time the setting was Yankee Stadium following the NYCFC game. Both teams were eagerly anticipating both the game itself and the opportunity to play at Yankee Stadium.

Moments after the game began, the NYPD stormed through the FDNY's defense to take an early 1-0 lead. The FDNY regrouped and responded quickly with a goal of their own by Eric Horrigan to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams battled hard throughout the rest of the first half, but the score remained 1-1 at half-time.

Soon after the break, the NYPD went ahead 2-1, but once again the FDNY responded quickly with a goal by Cesar Cequeira to tie the game at 2-2. With 10 minutes left in the game, the NYPD were able to take the lead again and leave the FDNY with a big battle on their hands. The FDNY applied a lot of pressure and created some good chances, but when the final whistle blew, the NYPD came out on top by a score of 3-2.

Both teams took some moments together following the game to congratulate each other and pose for pictures with the iconic Yankee Stadium serving as the backdrop. The NYPD played the game in pink jerseys to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Marking the seventh meeting between the two sides, this was the first time that the Yankee Stadium hosted the prestigious match, which is contested annually to raise money and awareness of the team’s respective charities.

The NYPD, who play in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, were raising awareness for the NYPD: Widow’s & Children’s Funds, which provides aid and assistance to widows, widowers and eligible dependents of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Meanwhile, the FDNY, who take part in the Long Island Soccer Football League as the College Point Flames, hoped to use the match to spread awareness of The Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation which was set up to recognize Sergio Villanueva, the FDNY Soccer team’s no.10 and central midfielder.

Sergio passed away during the events of September 11 and the charity serves as a way to educate the community on the tragedy and recognizes the hard work of the all those who lost their lives that day

Through the foundation, the FDNY soccer team has set up youth soccer clinics globally for over 3000 children. Locations include Hempstead, NY; Exeter City, UK; Baumholder, Germany; Rome, Italy; and others.
