The Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) has announced that, in working with Nassau County officials, it has been able to bring its top amateur championship game, the Anthony Cangero Super Cup back to the location where it used to be played in front of hundreds of spectators in the 1990′s.

It will be played at Mitchel Field Stadium on Wednesday June 27 at 8pm, under the lights, where the Long Island Amateur Division 1 League winner will face-off with the Division 1 McKim Cup winner for bragging rights for the best team on the Island and a spot in the Eastern New York State Soccer Association Champions League (Rapaglia Cup).

Anthony Cangero was a giant in the game of soccer in New York, inducted into the Eastern New York State Amateur Soccer Association in 2000 and sat as President of the LISFL for over 12 years from 1992-2004 before he lost a tragic battle with cancer. One of his lasting legacies was the creation of the Super Cup, which debuted at the old Mitchel Field Stadium in 1996 and was won by Queens-based New York Irish Rovers against Mineola Alheirense SC. After Cangero’s untimely death, the cup was relocated to Suffolk County for budget reasons, where it was played up until 2011 and won by Nassau County giant Forest Park.

“Anthony was a dear friend of mine, and I know he is smiling today” said first-year president and fellow ENYSSA and USASA Hall of Famer Gus Xikis. “This game is the best amateur soccer that Long island has to offer and in recognition of a great man in our sport- it is only fitting that it should be played in a world-class facility here in Nassau County.” Xikis was at the game the last time it was played at the Stadium and recalls the hundreds of fans who showed up to watch the game and the emotional celebrations that occurred during the trophy presentation.

Admittance is free.

The LISFL is Long Island’s only adult sanctioned soccer league and is affiliated with the Eastern New York State Amateur Soccer Association and the United States Amateur Soccer Association.
